What does Cultivate mean?

Definition of Cultivate

Written by Andrea Rayne

Cultivating is the process of loosening the soil around your plants and removing weeds that compete for water and nutrients.

This task is typically done with a hoe, hand cultivator, or other garden tool to lightly work the top layer of soil between plants.

Why Cultivate?

  • Removes weeds before they become a problem

  • Helps air and water reach plant roots

  • Breaks up soil crusting after rain or watering

  • Reduces competition for nutrients and moisture

Does Cultivation Look Different for Every Crop?

The goal is usually the same for all crops: keep weeds under control and maintain healthy soil around your plants.

However, some crops require extra care:

  • Shallow-rooted crops (like lettuce) should be cultivated gently to avoid disturbing roots.

  • Larger crops (like corn, tomatoes, or peppers) can often tolerate deeper cultivation between rows.

  • Once plants mature and fill in the space, cultivation may be needed less often.

Tips for Cultivating

  • Cultivate when weeds are small and easy to remove.

  • Avoid cultivating too deeply near plant stems.

  • Cultivating after a light rain can make the job easier.

  • Consider adding mulch after cultivating to help prevent new weeds from growing.
